Kings Entertainment completes acquisition of Braight AI Technologies

British Columbia-based betting supplier Kings Entertainment has closed its acquisition of Braight AI Technologies after obtaining all of the data specialist’s issued and outstanding shares.

Braight AI is a provider of Artificial Intelligence Big Data analytics solutions, specializing in leveraging the power of AI to extract actionable insights from vast amounts of data, empowering businesses to make informed decisions.

Kings, meanwhile, is an international online service provider for lottery, casino, and sportsbook gambling.

Completion of the acquisition comes just four weeks after Kings announced it had entered into a share exchange agreement with Braight AI, a private company existing under the laws of British Columbia.

Kings stated the intention of the acquisition was to leverage Braight AI’s technology to accelerate its user verification process while also exploring other ways the technology can benefit its lotto and gaming platforms.

Subsequently, Kings has appointed Jakub Bąbelek and Hanna Chaban to its Board of Directors, while Anthony Zelen has resigned as a Director.

Kings further confirmed that it issued an aggregate of 59,289,392 common shares in the capital of the company to the shareholders of Braight AI at a deemed value of $0.185 per payment share, with the holders agreeing to include a voluntary hold period for 50% of the payment shares as requested by the Canadian Securities Exchange.

The voluntary hold period is for four months and will expire on Nov. 14.

Meanwhile, Kings has issued 6,846,350 common shares to an arm’s length finder at a deemed value of $0.185 per finder’s share.

The finder’s shares are subject to a statutory hold period of four-months and one day in accordance with applicable securities legislation ending on Nov. 15.

Spreads.ca secures wager exclusivity as official sportsbook of Ice Wars III

Last week, NorthStar Gaming confirmed Spreads.ca, powered by the company’s subsidiary Slapshot Media, as the official sportsbook of Ice Wars III.

Taking place last Saturday, July 15, the professional ice hockey fighting event featured an eight-man round robin-style competition with fighters competing for the title ‘King of the Rink’.

Spreads.ca, meanwhile, offered its players an exclusive opportunity to wager on the event, providing real-time odds ahead of each round to create an ‘immersive, real-time betting experience’.

Pre-event lines positioned Chris Lockhart as the favourite to skate away as the Ice Wars champion but a panel of experts ultimately judged Ryan Devine as King of the Rink in Cheyenne, Wyoming.

“This event is designed to bring one of hockey’s most exciting moments together with some of North America’s toughest enforcers,” said Robert Davidman, Co-Founder, Spreads.ca.

“We’re excited to be a part of an unforgettable night of action-packed hockey fights and entertainment. Ice Wars III will ignite hockey’s biggest fans across the country, and we are thrilled to be in on the action.”

Based in Ontario, NorthStar Gaming entered into an agreement to acquire Slapshot Media in April, subsequently closing the deal in May.

Explaining his company’s acquisition of Slapshot, NorthStar CEO and Founding Partner Michael Mokowitz underlined the importance of expansion across Canada, with the deal enabling NorthStar to enter new markets in the country.

Significantly, Spreads.ca is not available in Ontario, with NorthStar previously insisting that it would not offer any other online casino and sportsbook in the province aside from its NorthStar Bets brand.

AGCO hands horse trainer three-year suspension amid ‘suspicious’ racehorse death

Horse trainer Carol Voyer has been issued monetary penalties totaling $11k by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) following the ‘suspicious’ death of racehorse Cams Lucky Sam.

The Crown corporation governs, directs, controls and regulates horse racing in the province, and has alleged that Voyer, of Puslinch Ontario, violated multiple Rules of Standardbred Racing; Rule 6.27, Rules 6.47.01(a) and 6.47.07(a)(b), and Rules 6.20(a)(b)(c) and 6.22.

The violations include committing an act of neglect, providing misleading information regarding the whereabouts of the horse, engaging in conduct not in the best interest of racing, and failing to report the death of the racehorse to the AGCO.

In addition to the monetary penalties handed down, the AGCO has also suspended Voyer for three years, from July 19, 2023 to July 18, 2026.

Tom Mungham, CEO and Registrar, AGCO, commented: “The AGCO will continue to hold those who fail to follow regulations accountable for their actions, especially when it involves the well-being of racehorses.

“The AGCO’s paramount interest lies in safeguarding the health and welfare of racehorses, protecting the safety of individuals, and maintaining the integrity of racing as a whole.”

Under the Rules of Racing, any licensed horse racing participant issued a Ruling has the right to appeal the AGCO’s action to the Horse Racing Appeal Panel (HRAP), which is an independent adjudicative body mandated to hear appeals of decisions.

The monetary penalties are the latest handed down by the AGCO, which last month ordered Fitzdares Canada and BV Gaming to pay $15k each for offering prohibited bets on Canadian major junior hockey.

Unibet takes pole position as official online casino of Honda Indy Toronto

Unibet has been named the official online casino of the Honda Indy Toronto as the annual motorsport festival gears up for its 35th edition this week.

Taking place between July 14-16, the Grand Prix of Toronto is IndyCar’s second-longest running street race and is the third oldest race on the current schedule.

This year, the festival has called upon Unibet to become its official online casino, while Kindred Group’s flagship brand has also secured naming rights to the Unibet Finish Line Lounge, a trackside beer garden and viewing area, and the Unibet Victory Circle, the iconic driver celebration space.

“The Honda Indy is always a highly anticipated weekend in Toronto as our historic Exhibition Place grounds transform into a race track,” said Amanda Brewer, Country Manager, Canada at Kindred Group.

“Kindred’s flagship brand Unibet is proud to sponsor this long-standing summer tradition, as it gives us a chance to say thank you to our customers and support a fun and exhilarating event that is celebrating its 35th anniversary in 2023.

This year’s Honda Indy is sure to bring non-stop thrills and excitement, just like Unibet.”

According to Honda Indy Toronto, Unibet’s support will ‘help elevate the fan experience’ at this year’s event in downtown Toronto.

Jeff Atkinson, President of Honda Indy Toronto, added: “We are excited to join Unibet in an extensive partnership at this year’s Honda Indy Toronto. As the official online casino and title sponsor of the start finish line beer garden, Unibet is helping us enhance the fan experience in a terrific way.

“We look forward to the iconic racing tradition where we watch all the drivers lift their trophies at the Unibet Victory Circle.”

Manav Bhargava, Segev LLP: Bridging the Canadian-Indian gap in gaming

When Manav Bhargava learned Segev LLP was opening an office in Toronto, the gears started clicking into place. And when he discovered the firm’s clients were looking to enter the Indian market, it felt like stars were fully aligning.

Bhargava, a gaming lawyer licensed to practise in both Canada and India, is something of a gaming industry compliance veteran. He started in private practice, serving multiple gaming companies in India over a period of five years before moving to Toronto in June 2021 to join Esports Capital Corp as Director of Research.

“It was just the right time to enter the gaming space in Ontario,” Bhargava explained to Canadian Gaming Business. “On April 4 last year, Ontario announced its new framework where it allowed private players to apply for gaming licences, and single event sports betting became legal just some time before that. So the market really opened up and I was at one of the few firms where we were really involved even before this framework was being made and drafted, and we gave our inputs there.”

Ron Segev, Segev LLP

Bhargava’s time served at Esports Capital Corp set him up perfectly for a conversation with Ron Segev, Founding Partner of Segev LLP – a British Columbia and US-based law firm with strong expertise in the field of gaming and gambling.

“I started talking to Ron some time back and I learned that they were opening an office here [Toronto], and a lot of Ron’s clients were also looking at India – they were pretty bullish on India and opportunities there.”

Discussions between Segev and Bhargava subsequently transpired into a job offer, one which saw the latter agree to lead the firm’s Ontario Gaming Regulatory Compliance Practice and New India Desk last month.

In these dual roles, Manav actively tracks regulatory developments with respect to igaming, sports betting, and monetized competitive skill gaming in Canada and India to advise clients across the world.

Leading Segev LLP’s newly-formed India Desk, Bhargava guides a multidisciplinary team drawing from the firm’s range of gaming, M&A, securities and other practice areas to serve the needs of businesses seeking to tap the economic advantages of Canada-India business relations.

Bhargava said: “This just seemed like the right move. One, because of my interest in getting into [private] practice again, and two, being able to utilize both my licenses to practice in India and in Ontario.

“I believe that when me and Ron started talking, our approach to client service was very similar. It’s not only just providing the best legal advice, but it’s providing practical advice and also leveraging our network to bring business opportunities to clients, because we grow as they grow.”

Bhargava’s belief of sharing the same vision is echoed by Segev, who outlined the qualities that made Kaizen Gaming’s Compliance Officer an essential hire.

A shared vision

“The more I got to know him, the more I realised he has a very practical outcome focused approach,” said Segev. “The other thing I really liked about our conversations was that he’s an out-of-the-box thinker.

“We share the same approach, same values, same client centric values, and the same outcome-focused approach.”

For Segev, the appointment of Bhargava arrived at the perfect time as the firm seeks to attack two new opportunities in Canada.

“One opportunity is to better serve our Ontario-facing, or our Ontario-based, clients, because we have been in that market for several years and we’ve been very active with assisting clients entering it. But we noticed that sometimes you need a man on the ground.

“This is a project that we’ve been working on for years, but the pandemic scuttled it. It’s a mix of timing – you’ve got to get the right economics, you’ve got to get the right market opportunities, and you’ve got to get the right people in place, and the three coalesced.

“I think it’s important that we inform the market in Ontario that the AGCO registration rush isn’t the only thing that we’re interested in. We’re committed to the market there, we’re committed to the broader gaming and betting market in Ontario. We’re putting our money where our mouth is, we’re investing the resources and the time and energy, and part of that isn’t just opening an office there and starting with our first strategic lead hire – we’re going to start building a team in Toronto to serve the gaming industry better.

“We’ve increasingly been doing a lot more land-based work in Western Canada. We expect that’s going to translate into land-based work in Ontario and possibly other parts of Eastern Canada. We’ve increasingly been doing a lot of work with First Nations groups, particularly in Western Canada. We have a very solid relationship with the First Nations group in Quebec, and we expect that that’s going to continue. So it’s very important that we have a robust presence. And the idea is, even though we’re currently headquartered in Vancouver, apartments are starting to cycle through Toronto. You’re going to see a more robust physical presence there.”

Connecting the dots

Further opportunities in Ontario are not the only avenue Segev LLP is exploring. Instead, the firm is looking to go global by making key connections in India – the most populous country in the world – and Bhargava will be integral to making that happen for Segev LLP, according to its Founding Partner.

Segev said: “There is this 1.4 billion-person opportunity in the way of India. In our industry there’s all this talk of emerging markets, but what are the barriers to entry, and what’s the player value? Our clients have recognised that India is one of these very compelling markets.

“Now we have a Canadian qualified lawyer, we have a dual Canadian Indian citizen who knows the city very well. He’s spent the last five years of his career working with European and North American companies embedded in the team, so we think in terms of the service approach, it’s something that our clients would appreciate. But there’s two sides to that coin.

“It’s having a guide in India, having that proxy who can represent your interests, who understands you in North America and can communicate your needs and expectations in India in an effective manner. Someone who can understand Canadian law and understands Indian legal framework, and is a gaming specialist. It’s a real rare breed.

“Some of the stuff that they’ve been looking at are poker, daily fantasy sports, skill games, social games. In speaking with Manav, we understand that the market is going to open even further to accommodate different game types and we don’t want to be at the back of the line, we want to be at the front of the line. We want to be leading everybody into this lucrative market.”

Bridging a cultural barrier

Significantly, India also hosts the third-largest population of centi-millionaires – people who have at least USD$100m in investable assets – and Canada’s “serenity” regarding immigration and business laws is attracting Indian business to the country, according to Bhargava, who labelled it as a “unique opportunity”.

“It’s bridging a cultural barrier,” said Bhargava. “North American companies are used to a certain kind of way that services are delivered.

“As India opens up, there are markets like Ontario and North America; all the wisdom from their regulations and those regulators is also what we bring as a team when we enter India, so it’s just approaching India, and keeping in view the cultural differences that our North American clients or even potentially now European clients may have when they look at India and what they want.”

In keeping with the firm’s new-found commitment to strengthening Canada-India relations, Segev LLP recently announced a ‘strategic collaboration’ with Singhania & Co., whereby the partners will work to maximize business opportunities for international clients in both jurisdictions.

“This gives us some opportunity to be proactive in an emerging market that we know is of great interest to our clients,” said Segev.

Forbes names OLG on Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity for 2023 list

OLG has been selected as one of Canada’s Best Employers for Diversity for 2023, ranking 70th out of 150 on Forbes’ list.

The ranking was decided by Forbes in collaboration with Statista – an online platform specializing in data gathering – after conducting an independent survey of employees working for companies with more than 500 employees in Canada.

Forbes’ recognition of the Crown corporation’s diversity work follows that of Diversio, which last year rated OLG as one of the Top 20 Most Innovative Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion businesses.

Meanwhile, earlier this year, OLG conducted its third Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) Employee Census, reporting an 11% improvement in its inclusion score compared to 2021, which places the firm ‘well above’ industry benchmarks.

Esther Zdolec, OLG’s Senior Vice President of People and Culture, commented: “We want our employees to have the space to be themselves and feel empowered to use their imaginations and skills to benefit the people and the communities of Ontario.

“We see EDI as a pillar of our success — because together we are more creative, innovative and inclusive.”

OLG was also selected for Forbes’ list of Canada’s Best Employers in 2022 and 2023, placing in the top 20% of companies in the former and the top 15% in the latter.

“We know that our strength is in our collective differences and that every OLGer brings value to the team,” added Duncan Hannay, OLG’s President and CEO.

“We’re humbled to know that so many of our employees see OLG as a workplace that encourages and celebrates diversity — and we’re honoured to be recognized on Forbes prestigious list.”

Elsewhere this week, OLG inked a new affiliate marketing agreement with Gateway Casinos & Entertainment to promote its iCasino and iSports offering.

Fitzdares tasks Affili8 with digital strategy & SEO operations in Canada

Luxury sports betting brand Fitzdares has joined forces with igaming and betting specialist Affili8 to develop its digital strategy and SEO for operations in Canada.

Fitzdares first launched in Ontario in February, making the first time the bookmaker had launched its service outside its native UK.

Less than four months later, however, Fitzdares Canada was handed a monetary penalty by the AGCO ‘for offering prohibited bets on Canadian major junior hockey’.

Nevertheless, Fitzdares is focused on enhancing its operations in Canada, an objective which has seen the bookmaker extend its arm to another UK-based brand.

Tristan Wootton, Fitzdares’ Director of Growth, commented: “We’re delighted to work with Affili8 on our first launch outside of Europe.

“The team understands our brand ethos and not only solves one of our many headaches as we scale the business, but is also helping to educate our teams on best industry practice.

“We’re passionate about supporting British businesses like Affili8, so this is a win-win.”

Affili8 has been steadily growing since its launch as an online gambling company in 2020, managing to build up more than 40 sites across 15 different countries including Canada, Brazil, and Germany within its first year.

The firm expects to hit $1.7m turnover in the next 12 months.

“We’re excited to be working with Fitzdares again – they are such a unique brand with a great heritage in the igaming sector,” said Affili8 Director Chris O’Rourke. “We initially worked on a project with their UK sportsbook back in 2021 and we’ve maintained a relationship ever since.

“They acquired a Canadian (Ontario) licence in 2022 and we look forward to helping them establish themselves in what has quickly become a very competitive Canadian market.”

O’Rourke added: “Fitzdares is a wonderful brand to represent – it has personality and kudos in a very crowded market. However we’ve been getting fantastic results for all of our clients, enabling them to compete with the more established big-name brands.

“That has enabled us to expand with key appointments, including a new head of SEO, bringing the workforce to 11.

“It has been an amazing and intense journey for Affili8 so far – and long may it continue.“

Fitzdares, meanwhile, has plenty of plans in the pipeline for Canada, as alluded to by CEO William Woodhams in an interview with SBC earlier this year.

Duncan Hannay, OLG’s President and CEO, commented: “Our new marketing agreement with Gateway is another example of how we are working with our valued partners to build on the strength of the OLG brand and enhance the gaming experience for customers.

“This in turn helps us increase our contribution to the people and Province of Ontario.”

This latest agreement builds on the existing relationship shared between the two organizations, with Gateway operating 14 casinos across Southwest, North and Central Ontario on behalf of OLG, all of which were disrupted by a cyber attack in April.

Tony Santo, CEO of Gateway, added: “The agreement with OLG is another way we are delivering excellent customer experiences. Our customers can enjoy the convenience of playing their favourite games or betting on the big game from the convenience of  their phone or laptop

RGC shares Ontario market insights in 22-23 Annual Report

The Responsible Gambling Council (RGC) has today published its Annual Report for 2022-23, detailing the advancements in RG made across Canada.

Over the last year, the non-profit organization has bolstered its presence in the RG space with several key partnerships and new ventures.

The RGC’s public service announcement about the risks of igaming and sports betting – broadcast on networks throughout Canada in collaboration with thinktv – was a particularly powerful event, garnering over 100 million impressions.

Meanwhile, the launch of the regulated Ontario igaming market in March 2022 saw the Toronto-based organization utilize RG Check – ‘the most comprehensive responsible gambling accreditation program in the world’ – to conduct the first round of accreditations with 17 of Ontario’s newly licensed igaming operators.

Then, in February, the RGC released its Super Bowl survey, where it gathered insights into Ontarian’s plans to watch and bet on the NFL’s showpiece event, finding that 49% were indeed planning to bet on it.

This provided the RGC and industry operators with valuable insights into the strengths of the operators’ RG strategies and programs, enabling them to identify where improvements were needed to optimize consumer protection.

The NPO also conducted its second EDI survey in 2022-23, calling on the assistance of Diversio, with the RGC Board and employees achieving ‘excellent’ improvements in its inclusion scores.

Addressing stakeholders on publication of the report, CEO Shelley White said: “We are grateful to all those we collaborate with either through research, training, our RG Check accreditation program, or our prevention education programs. We would also like to thank our Board of Directors and staff for their deep commitment to our vision ‘A world where gambling never comes at a human cost’ and their ongoing efforts to our prevention initiatives.

“RGC will continue to be a bold, courageous and a transparent RG leader within Ontario, Canada and globally. We are encouraged to see the advancements in RG, and the industry’s expanding commitment. We will leverage this momentum to continue to work with key stakeholders to build a more robust RG culture, in each of the jurisdictions that we serve.

“We look forward to what the future brings for our organization, and to working together with all of you to continue to make an impactful difference in the lives of individuals, their families, and our communities.”

Other highlights listed by the RGC include, as a result of its PlaySmart Centre partnership with OLG, connecting with over 65,000 visitors through educational events and providing support to over 5,000 people.
