Shoreline Casino Workers Strike in Fight for Fair Wages

Workers at Shorelines Casino Belleville in Ontario are striking in a push to secure what they describe as fair wages.

At 1 a.m. on October 22, a strike commenced at the Belleville casino, with picket lines erected later in the morning.

Bargaining committees for Unifor Local 1090 and the employer worked late into the night to reach an agreement. Parties will resume meetings again on October 22 with the goal of resolving the dispute to resume casino operations.

Local 1090 members at Shorelines Belleville rejected the employer’s most recent offer by 84 per cent on October 20. The union represents 93 workers at the casino in table games, slots, food and beverage, kitchen and culinary, facilities and housekeeping, guest services, and cashiering.

Unifor is Canada’s largest union in the private sector, representing 315,000 workers in every major area of the economy. The union advocates for all working people and their rights, fights for equality and social justice in Canada and abroad, and strives to create progressive change for a better future.

Report Finds BCLC Injects $2B into Local Economy

A recent study by Thompson Rivers University has found that since 1985, the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC) and its gaming activities contributed nearly $2.2 billion to the economic and social development of the Kamloops region around the lottery corporation’s headquarters.

“BCLC’s role to give back to British Columbians is underscored by its economic contributions to not only Kamloops but funds generated by gaming that go back to the people of our province in the form of healthcare, education and important community programs,” said Selina Robinson, minister of finance and minister responsible for BCLC. “BCLC remains an important employer in the region and a vital organization for the people and communities of British Columbia.”

According to Dr. Peter Tsigaris, an economist who conducted the study, the Crown corporation guaranteed 667 full-time jobs in 2019/2020. That includes nearly 445 positions at the Kamloops headquarters, as well as 222 in the community.

The TRU study estimates that $232m was spent on local goods and services, making it to the overall contribution of $324.9m.

According to the study, during the last 35 years, BCLC spent $232m on local goods and services from Kamloops suppliers. In total, during that time, the lottery contributed nearly $324.9m to the local economy.

The study also found BCLC provided $2.6m in community sponsorships for a total social impact of $6.2m. And employees donated almost $4m cash to local charities since 1985.

“We’re so proud of what BCLC has contributed to Kamloops, so appreciative of what Kamloops has contributed to BCLC,” said Lynda Cavanaugh, BCLC’s interim president and CEO. “And we look forward to many more years of success together. “Not only are BCLC’s operations positively contributing to the community but so too are our people, who are passionate volunteers, advocates and contributors.”

BCLC employees in Kamloops volunteer approximately 45 hours on average each year. Added up, that amounts to 475,659 hours and a cumulative social impact estimated at $32.2m.

“BCLC is an important friend of the Kamloops Food Bank and many charities in Kamloops,” said Bernadette Siracky, the food bank’s executive director. BCLC’s people have a true passion for giving back and have donated a significant amount of their own time and resources to support countless causes and organizations that make a real difference in our community.”

Penn National Completes Acquisition of Score Media & Gaming

The acquisition of Score Media and Gaming by Penn National Gaming was completed on October 19, Penn confirmed in a statement.

The total value of the deal is approximately US$2.0 billion ($2.47 billion) in cash and stock.

Penn had agreed to acquire theScore in a US$2 billion cash-and-stock deal in August which will see Penn pay $17 in cash and 0.2398 shares – $17’s worth – of its stock for every theScore share, for a total consideration of $34 per share. This will mean that theScore shareholders will hold approximately seven per cent of the new combined business, while current Penn shareholders will hold the remaining 93 per cent.

Penn’s statement says the acquisition of theScore fortifies its digital media and gaming strategy, creating “a complete one-stop entertainment destination.”

It cites theScore as the third-most popular sports media app in North America and number one in Canada and emphasizes that adding theScore’s fully integrated media and betting platform and cutting-edge technology will further strengthen Penn National’s existing ecosystem and ability to seamlessly serve its customers.

Penn said at the time of the announcement of the deal in August that it plans to migrate its betting products to a platform currently being built by theScore.

Pairing theScore with Barstool Sports provides Penn National with two of North America’s most powerful and unique sports media assets, the statement continues, with the capabilities to generate best-in-class engagement and enhanced customer acquisition and retention across its media and gaming properties.

“We’re excited to be creating this powerful new entertainment flywheel that will provide us with multiple growth channels that transcend our current business verticals,” said Jay Snowden, President and CEO of Penn National Gaming. “We look forward to entering the Canadian gaming market, which represents a compelling new opportunity, and are proud to have John Levy and his family and their entire team bring their best-in-class technology, unique perspective and skill sets to our Penn National family.”

John Levy, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of theScore, added: “It is a truly exciting time to join Penn National and collaborate with their team to build a highly innovative and first-of-its-kind sports media and gaming company. There is natural alignment between the two companies, and we are perfectly positioned to capitalize on the growing entertainment opportunities across mobile sports media, sports betting and online casino. We believe the combined company is well-positioned to continue growing our business across North America, including the expected opening of sports betting and iGaming in Ontario later this year.”

The takeover had been approved in recent days by the Minister of Canadian Heritage under the Investment Canada Act, while theScore’s shareholders had also overwhelmingly voted to approve the proposed acquisition of the business by Penn National Gaming. During a special meeting on October 12, 99.96 per cent of the votes cast by shareholders were in favour of the deal, with just 0.04 per cent against.

TheScore is currently developing its own platform, part of a wider operational overhaul. The acquisition will see theScore continue to be operated as a standalone business and led by its founding Levy family “with the same operating philosophy that has driven the company’s success to date”.

Penn National said at the time of the initial acquisition announcement that it believes the Canadian gaming market represents “a compelling opportunity” for growth and that it was attracted to theScore, in part, for its ready access to a deep pool of Canadian engineering and technology expertise.

The company adds that not only will the acquisition reinforce its position at the epicentre of sports, media, gaming, and technology, but will also accelerate its strategy to enter into other verticals that leverage the Barstool and theScore brands and consumer appeal such as the esports media market.

Parleh Media Launches Canada’s First Dedicated Sports Betting Networks

Parleh Media Group, the independent content and production company that operates sports betting-focused publication The Parleh, launched Parleh TV on October 12, describing it as the country’s first dedicated sports betting broadcast network.

The free online channel is now available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and gives Canadians access to a full slate of popular sports betting shows and segments including Puck Talks, The Parleh’s marquee hockey betting show, which will debut with insights and on-the-street segments for the seven Canadian NHL teams. Other programs include Parleh Today, Parleh Picks, Footy Talks, Five A Side, Fast Money EPL and Spreadzies.

“For anyone who’s been tracking sports betting endeavours in the US, you’ll know that established broadcast and startup media companies have been heavily investing in sports betting,” said Mark Silver, the founder and CEO of Parleh Media Group. “The acquisition of VSiN (the Vegas Stats and Information Network) by DraftKings earlier this year was like a shot across the bow for us, and accelerated our business plan.

“As much as Canada welcomes and adopts trends and pop culture from our neighbours to the south, our society continues to demonstrate that our values are diverse and tolerant, which is what makes us Canadian. That’s why at The Parleh we believe that Canadians deserve sports betting content that speaks to how we uniquely follow, cheer and win.”

Kevin Kennedy, President and Executive Producer of Parleh Media Group, added: “From NFL over/unders and weekly CFL winners to dark-horse picks for the Stanley Cup, The Parleh has taken the unknown out of sports betting and is making it fun and entertaining for the everyday sports fan. With the launch of Parleh TV, fans will get the straight goods presented in a fun and easily accessible manner. They won’t need to sift through reams of data and strategies to calculate the outcomes of a $5 bet.”

The Parleh TV experience will also be a go-to destination for brands looking to connect with engaged sports fans. The platform will feature integrated advertising and sponsorship opportunities allowing for impactful branded content. All commercial opportunities with Parleh Media Group are managed by sports media consultancy, ThePostGame, which work with a suite of Canadian- and US-based sports properties such as NBC Sports, USA Today Sports Media Group, FOX Sports, New York Jets, Canadian Premier League, and PGA Worldwide Exhibitions.

Spotlight on Toronto

On October 19, Parleh also announced it will be spotlighting Toronto, the biggest city in North America’s fifth-largest jurisdiction, with its own Parleh TV Toronto channel that it describes as the city’s first dedicated multi-sport news and information TV channel.

The 24/7 online channel was launched ahead of the start of the NBA’s regular season and the Toronto Raptors’ home opener against the Washington Wizards. Sports fans will have access to The Parleh’s popular picks segments and shows which follow the Raps, Leafs, TFC, Argos and major sports events and updates that appeal to the city’s passionate sports-following population.

The channel also offers integrated advertising and sponsorship opportunities for advertisers.

“We honestly couldn’t help ourselves when the idea was brought forth to create a first-of-its-kind multi-sport TV experience dedicated to sports fans in Toronto,” said Kennedy. “If you want hot tips on tonight’s Leafs’ game or wonder if the Raps will hit the Over, Parleh TV Toronto has got you covered.”

Parleh says it will continue to launch new shows and segment formats in the weeks and months ahead. Announcements related to distribution of the channel beyond the Parleh TV website will be communicated as agreements are made with partners.

New Jersey Becomes First U.S. State to Record $1B Monthly Sports Betting Handle

New Jersey has become the first U.S. state to generate more than US$1 billion in sports betting in a single month by taking in US$1.01bn in wagers in September.

That total broke the U.S. record of US$996.3 million that New Jersey had set in December 2020. September’s volume was up 35.1 per cent from the US$748.6m generated in September 2020 and up 52.1 per cent from $664.7m in August.

The milestone came as New Jersey also set a new high for online casino revenue, helping to push the state to the total gaming revenue record (US$453.6 million).

Gross gaming revenue in September just missed an all-time high, too. Operator revenue rose 82.9 per cent to US$82.4m in September from US$45.1m in September 2020 and 58.5 per cent from US$52m in August. September’s revenue was just short of the previous high of us$82.6m in January. Sports betting produced us$12.1m in state and local taxes in September.

New Jersey crossing the $1bn threshold has been a long time coming, as sportsbooks in the state combined to generate at least US$930m in wagering in November, December, and January. September’s record total has been boosted by the return of the NFL and the NHL.

Bettors wagered US$918.4m in September through online sportsbooks, representing 90.8 per cent of the statewide handle, the second-most of all time. Retail sportsbooks attracted a record US$92.7m in September, up from US$51.8m in wagers in August.

New Jersey sportsbooks have already shattered their annual records for revenue and wagers, producing US$558m in revenue on US$7.1bn in wagering through the first nine months of 2021. With the final three months holding baseball’s postseason and the return of the NBA’s regular season debut, a strong finish to 2021 could push wagering past US$10bn for the year.

Aristocrat Targeting North American iGaming with $4.6B Acquisition of Playtech

Online gambling company Playtech has agreed to a £2.7 billion ($4.6 billion, US$3.7 billion) takeover by Australian gaming and slots manufacturer Aristocrat, reports BNN Bloomberg and others.

Aristocrat says the acquisition, which the companies expect to be completed in the second quarter of 2022 subject to shareholder approval, will help to increase its scale in the online sports betting market in North America and provide growth channels for its casino business.

Aristocrat also hopes to benefit from Playtech’s presence in North America and Europe, which it expanded via the 2018 takeover of Italy-based Snaitech and a series of launches in U.S. states in recent years.  The Isle of Man-based Playtech has furthered its growth in North America as U.S. states including New Jersey have relaxed rules allowing online gambling and sports betting to take place, and it recently entered into a multi-state agreement with Unibet Interactive, a part of Kindred Group.

The proposed acquisition has been given unanimous backing by the Playtech board which recommends that shareholders vote in favor of the deal, reports SBC Americas.

According to the Financial Times, the offer values the company at 680 pence a share, a 58 per cent premium to Friday’s closing price. Playtech’s shares rose 57 per cent on October 18 to 675p after the announcement.

Aristocrat CEO and managing director Trevor Croker said: “The proposed combination would bring together Aristocrat’s world-class gaming content and customer and regulatory relationships with Playtech’s industry leading global online RMG (real money gaming) platform (B2B) and European B2C footprint.

“The combined group would offer a broad portfolio of end-to-end solutions for gaming customers around the world, as well as seamless player experiences, underpinned by a shared focus on responsible gameplay and innovation. Additionally, the business will be ideally positioned to unlock sustainable shareholder value by seizing opportunities in the fast-growing global online RMG segment as they continue to open up, particularly in North America.”

Playtech CEO Mor Weizer believes that the acquisition marks an exciting opportunity in the next stage of growth for the firm that delivers significant benefits to stakeholders, customers, and shareholders.

“This deal has the potential to enhance our distribution, our capacity to build new and deeper relationships with partners, and bolsters our technological capabilities,” he said. “The combination of our two companies builds one of the largest B2B gaming platforms in the world, with the people, infrastructure and expertise to provide our customers with a truly best-in-class offer across all areas of gaming and sports betting.”

Todd Eilers at Eilers & Krejcik Gaming noted that the deal with fill “an obvious void” for Aristocrat by getting them into the onlien gaming space. “The acquisition of Playtech gets them into this market in a sizable way,” Eilers said, via iGB North America. “The biggest opportunity will be to introduce Aristocrat’s award winning land-based slot content across the Playtech network as well as launching iGaming operations and content in the U.S. market.”

Aristocrat currently holds approximately 40 per cent of the U.S./Canada land-based B2B market share, added Eilers, and they should be expected to gain significant share of the U.S./Canada iGaming market in the years following this acquisition.

Next Gen of Tech on Show at Global Gaming Expo 2021

Las Vegas played host to the Global Gaming Expo 2021 earlier this month and numerous Canadian Gaming Association member companies showed off their latest innovations.

Scientific Games is making its biggest investment ever into innovating and modernizing its longstanding Bally system and its portfolio of products and services. Rob Bone, Senior VP of Global Systems and Table Games, said the goal is “to create a services-fabric, data-first approach to optimize value and agility to ensure we deliver the compelling player acquisition and retention innovations to operators that we are known for,” per CDC Gaming Reports.

A primary target is cashless gaming at both slots and table games. Scientific Games currently offers a Unified Wallet product and has been investing in cashless IP for well over a decade. The company is focused on giving operators freedom of choice to integrate with several other fintech solution providers, such as Everi or Sightline, or utilize Scientific Games’ own integrated Global Payments’ VIP Mobility product, the only existing single-app cashless solution that dynamically adjusts to each operator’s brand and supports anonymous play. Within that product, payments and credits can be funded and redeemed on phones, and also built in are several gaming-specific features like AML controls and responsible-gaming limits that are completely configurable.

Additionally, Scientific Games’ Player Boutique allows players to select their own individual prize at the slot machine and have it delivered to their home via Amazon. Operators also have the option to scale their promotions by offering the chance to accrue larger-than-normal prizes such as appliances, jewelry, and electronics by building credits over days, weeks, even months.

Everi, which dominated the High-Denomination Mechanical Reel Category of a September 2021 Eilers & Krejcik index report on Game Performance, introduced a new high-denomination mechanical reel game at the Expo.

Its new Player Classic Signature cabinet is described by Dean Ehrlich, EVP & Games Business Leader, as a “complimentary” model to its successful Player Classic that brings newer technology to further enhance the gamer experience. That includes a stronger CPU and other new enhancements and display technology to ergonomically utilize some bonusing and top-screen features of the Classic.

CDC Gaming Reports notes that by continuing to support existing models, it enables a continuation of customer loyalty while offering newer technology and more flexibility for operators who choose to upgrade.

Also in mechanical reel slots, IGT debuted the DiamondRS and the Peak65 cabinets.

Anthony Baerlocher, VP of innovation of mechanical reels for IGT, said the DiamondRS is the first cabinet in the industry to allow a multi-game configuration on a reel slot. It also gives operators flexibility, such as the choice to offer only one type of game and to choose the denomination values.

The Peak65, also flexible and available in various configurations, offers titles such as Wheel of Fortune High Roller, the latest title for gaming’s most popular slot line and made especially for the Peak65. It boasts a 65-inch progressively curved display, a 13.3-inch dynamic player panel with dual bash buttons, and advanced graphics, sound, and ergonomic technology.

Meanwhile, Konami showed off the latest in its Dimension series, with new jumbo Dimension 75 and Dimension Top Box cabinets previewed at the show. The Dimension 75, a jumbo version of the already popular Dimension 49J cabinet with a vertical 75-inch screen, had already soft launched at the NIGA tradeshow in July. Meanwhile, the Dimension Top Box features a horizontal lower screen with a large vertical monitor above, a style that has been popular with several other vendors.

Aristocrat launched its new Neptune Canopy that features not only multiple dual curved displays, but an overhead canopy screen that connects with other slot cabinets.

The company also premiered its new Dune game, a tie-in with the blockbuster movie set to be released later this month, hosted in the Neptune, which also offers a new ergonomically designed sound chair with built-in speakers and the capability to move back and forth and swivel, as well as some vibration. Coming in a single or double configuration and featuring clips from the movie, the double configuration game features an arched LED canopy showing images moving between the two units.

“With the Neptune double cabinet, it’s like playing this game in IMAX,” said Ryan Scott, vice president of gaming operations for Aristocrat. “It’s got a great play, sound, and feel to it.” Scott added that about 50 units are scheduled to go live at casinos across U.S. on the day the movie debuts in the country, October 22.

In addition, JCM Global, one of the largest suppliers of systems in the global casino industry, showcased its FUZION solution, a consolidation of all of its systems’ technology combined into one package. The FUZION is operating in California and newly installed in Nevada, but growing.

Dave Kubajak, SVP of sales, marketing, and operations, said the solution will bring cashless technology to players, as well as help operators manage and track financials and reports, manage assets, and offer promotional ticketing and virtual TITO abilities.

U.S. Casinos Eagerly Await November Return of Canadian Staff & Visitors

Just as happened the other way around in August when Canada began to allow visitors from the U.S., casinos in northern U.S. states are eagerly awaiting the return of Canadian visitors and staff.

COVID-19 has halted the flow of visitors in the traditionally busy time of Fall in northern U.S. states, when Canadian visitors typically flood into the region to celebrate holidays like Canadian Thanksgiving.

Last week, businesses all along the border were celebrating the news that in November, fully vaccinated Canadians would again be allowed into the United States via land crossings such as the ones between Ontario and New York/Michigan, British Columbia and Washington, and Thunder Bay and Minnesota.

That sentiment has been seen on both sides of the border, particular around busy communities such as Niagara Falls and Detroit-Windsor.

Politicians on both sides of the aisle had been clamouring for the Biden administration to lift the ban on Canadians’ nonessential travel for months, particularly after the Canadian government eased restrictions entering in August.
Leaders of several casinos and tribal gaming centres, such as the St. Regis Mohawk Reservation, are eagerly awaiting the return of Canadian gamblers, the absence of whom has been hugely damaging, notes the New York Times.

It is an almost universal truth to say that casinos along the Canada-U.S. border rely heavily on tourism that crosses that boundary by vehicle. For the last 20 months, many of these have been hanging on by thread in the face of vastly reduced revenues, while others have simply been unable to take the financial losses and have closed their doors for good.

Officials with Tulalip Resort Casino in Tulalip, Wash. said local guests have been the lifeline surviving the pandemic without tourists from British Columbia.

“We’ve kind of ridden that roller coaster up and down—restrictions loosening, tightening. But it’s really been dependent on our local Washingtonians, then it kind of expanded into Oregon and Idaho. But those guests from the north those are the ones that represent an even larger number,” said Troy Longwith, VP of hotel operations at Tulalip Resort Casino, per Q13 Fox.

Longwith said before the borders closed, they would host about 500 charter buses per year full of Canadian tourists, representing tens of thousands of people gaming and staying overnight.

“That’s a big chunk of folks that we just haven’t seen for almost 20 months. So, whenever there’s been an inkling of the Canadian border maybe opening, those folks that we talk to almost daily up there are just chomping at the bit,” said Longwith.

Meanwhile, in Minnesota, Grand Portage Lodge and Casino, a few kilometres from the border and Thunder Bay, Ont., employs many Canadians, according to Linda Jurek, executive director of Visit Cook County.

“They have a lot of day tripping traffic and a lot of overnight traffic as well,” Jurek told CBC. “They’ve been really struggling without that population able to visit.”

Grand Portage’s marketing director Todd Ford told TBNewsWatch that November “can’t come soon enough”. While some of the casino and resort’s Canadian staff have been able to cross the border as essential workers, reopening the border will now allow others to return to their jobs.

Pandemic-era restrictions such as mask-wearing, social distancing, sanitizing, and, in many places, proof of vaccination for entry will of course remain in place as Canadian workers and visitors return, as they did when U.S. citizens were allowed back to Canadian facilities in late summer.

That is something casino operators have long ago got used to. Ultimately, it’s a case of doing what is necessary to allow gaming centres to operate as fully as they can, with Canadians as a core part of that.

“I think we have felt it,” says Omak, Wash. mayor Cindy Gagne of the city missing Canadian tourism, per Global News.
Located about an hour south of the B.C. border community of Osoyoos, Omak, Wash. has a population of around 5,000. Prior to the border being closed, it was common to see scores of B.C. licence plates in Omak on any given day.

Gagne said certain places, like the casino in the area, rely on Canadian traffic. She is confident that visitors will have the confidence to come back, even if it begins slowly from November. “I think people will be careful,” said Gagne. “But I do expect a trickle initially, and then people will go back to normal. We’re excited.”
