Intema Solutions officially becomes React Gaming Group

Updated April 19

Intema Solutions has officially been renamed React Gaming Group, a press release has announced.

The rebrand follows the company’s February acquisition of Livestream Gaming, owner of the LOOT.BET server-based real-money gaming platform and esports betting brand. The group says its new name will better reflect its activities across the esports and iGaming sectors.

As well as LOOT.BET, a global leader in esports betting, React Gaming also encompasses four other subsidiary brands: Compete.gg, Team Bloodhounds, Generationz Gaming Entertainment, and Parabellum.

Compete.gg was formerly known as HypeX.gg and is a leading esports social gaming platform that specializes in peer-to-peer gaming, allowing users to engage in competitive events, tournaments, and 1v1 wagering. It is also one of the premier esports tournament tools used to facilitate and manage competitions, track statistics, and award prizes.

Meanwhile, Team Bloodhounds is a top-tier Canadian Fortnite team; Generationz Gaming provides a customizable online/mobile iGaming and esports betting platform; and Parabellum is a Canadian esports business from Toronto.

“With the completion of our LOOT.BET game-changing acquisition, it was time for us to rebrand our name to better reflect our activities in the esports and iGaming sector,” said Laurent Benezra, President and CEO of React Gaming. “The addition of LOOT.BET has increased our revenues considerably, and we are convinced that we can expand our leading online gaming and betting platform activities into promising new markets.

“Over the next few weeks, we will be launching several marketing initiatives to increase LOOT.BET’s user base, currently estimated to be over 500,000 users. We will also be launching programs to monetize the other subsidiaries that make up our esports ecosystem, including HypeX.gg, Team Bloodhounds and Generationz, as well as our professional esports team Parabellum Esports.”

React Gaming is now officially live with a new image, logo, and website.

MLSE partners with FanDuel, PokerStars, PointsBet Canada

Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment (MLSE), the owner of the Toronto Raptors, Toronto Maple Leafs, Toronto FC, and Toronto Argonauts sports franchises, has struck a combined deal with FanDuel and PokerStars, which are both owned by Flutter Entertainment.

The deal will make FanDuel the official sports betting partner of MLSE, while PokerStars will be designated as an official gaming partner of the company, pending successful registration with the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

FanDuel Sportsbook, PokerStars Casino, and PokerStars will all be featured prominently throughout Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Raptors games, including rink-board and on-court signage. The partnership will also allow FanDuel and PokerStars to collaborate on marketing integrations with all of MLSE’s teams.

“The Maple Leafs, Raptors, and Toronto FC are pioneering franchises and major pillars in Canadian sports culture,” said Dale Hooper, general manager for FanDuel Canada, in the release. “As we bring FanDuel to Ontario, we want to collaborate with globally recognized enterprises like MLSE to bring unique content experiences to some of Canada’s most dedicated sports fans.”

FanDuel is already licensed and operational in Ontario and has announced deals with TSN and the NHL Canada. This deal with MLSE would also seem to signpost that PokerStars intends to achieve registration sooner rather than later.

“We have epic plans for our community in Canada, and are excitedly looking forward to creating some incredible experiences in our birth country, when we launch very soon,” Tom Warren, PokerStars marketing director, said. “Partnering with MLSE gives us the opportunity to reach passionate fans across Ontario with a wide remit of poker and casino, heighten experiences wherever we can, and be a part of some major winning moments.”

Meanwhile, in a separate partnership, MLSE has also joined forces with PointsBet, another sportsbook that is live in Ontario.

The multi-year agreement will see PointsBet become an official sports betting partner of the MLSE’s teams. PointsBet has already struck a host of deals with the likes of the Ottawa Redblacks Canadian Football League franchise, as well as organizations such as Curling Canada, the NHL Alumni Association, and Dailyfaceoff.com & The Nation Network.

It was great to reunite with the industry on April 4

It seems like a long time ago already, but Monday, April 4 was a special day for the industry.

Ontario’s regulated and open online gaming and betting market finally officially launched at 12:01 a.m. on that day, and by the end of the day, 13 private online gaming and betting sites were fully licensed and operational in the province. More will undoubtedly follow.

The day began with a gathering at the Toronto Stock Exchange which saw the Canadian Gaming Association, Covers, theScore, and numerous more organizations come together to celebrate the official moment of launch.

Other events and receptions were held across the city throughout the day, and in the evening, the Canadian Gaming Association, Canadian Gaming Business, and SBC were proud to host an industry reception attended by people from all corners of the gaming industry.

We’d like to take this time to thank the dozens and dozens of attendees, who spanned everything from sportsbook operators to payments providers, responsible gambling personnel to technology suppliers, media companies to regulators, land-based gaming stakeholders to legal firms.

We’d also like to thank our two premier sponsors, props.cash and Relax Gaming, as well as recognize our supporting sponsors, who included Aird Berlis, Bragg Gaming Group, Delta Bingo & Gaming, McCarthy Tétrault, Nuvei, Paysafe, Rubicon Strategy, and Worldplay.

It was fantastic to be reunited with the industry again after so long spent apart by necessity, particularly to celebrate such a watershed moment for our great industry.

Finally, another shout-out here to everyone in the industry who has been a vocal advocate for a revamped online betting and gaming market in Canada, particularly to our longstanding partners at the Canadian Gaming Association, and its President & CEO Paul Burns, whose work has been tireless and often thankless.

We finally made it, and we can’t wait to see what comes next. We’ll see you all at the 25th Canadian Gaming Summit in Toronto in June.

Wizard Games enters Ontario with 888, BetMGM

Wizard Games has entered Ontario as a licensed online gaming supplier by launching its content with 888casino and BetMGM.

The company, a subsidiary of Aspire Global, received approval from the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) and intends to deliver its content with numerous operators.

The content delivery has been made possible through its integration with the Pariplay Fusion iGaming content aggregation platform. Over 120 titles from Wizard’s portfolio are now available to players in Canada’s most populous province.

The studio already has a presence in Canada through a supply deal in the province of Alberta.

North American growth remains a key strategy for Wizard, explained Joey Hurtado, Managing Director.

Our games are performing very well across North America and our entry into the highly promising Ontario market represents the latest step on our growth journey,” said Hurtado. “Together with our leading operator partners, we are excited to embark on this journey, delivering engaging and entertaining content to a brand new audience.”

Last month, Wizard Games had expanded its US position after signing a deal with BetMGM to supply its online casino platform in West Virginia.

IGT doubles its PlayDigital offering with iSoftBet acquisition

International Game Technology (IGT) is acquiring online casino games provider and third-party game aggregator iSoftBet in a deal it says will more than double its IGT PlayDigital portfolio to approximately 225 proprietary games.

Reported to be worth around C$219 million in cash, the acquisition is expected to be completed during the second quarter of 2022, subject to the satisfaction of customary closing conditions.

IGT CEO Vince Sadusky said in a news release the deal will enhance PlayDigital’s presence across North America and Europe.

“The acquisition of iSoftBet will provide market-tested proprietary digital content, advanced game aggregation capabilities, scalable promotional tools, analytics and strong creative talent to IGT’s PlayDigital operations,” said Sadusky. “This will enhance PlayDigital’s competitive capabilities with a proven, complementary content portfolio across Europe and North America as we provide best-in-class games and technology to our fast-growing iGaming customers.”

Alongside the acquisition of IGT’s PlayDigital games catalogue, the process will see the company gain iSoftBet’s proprietary game aggregation platform to distribute third-party games, as well as data-driven promotional and user-engagement tools.

Winds of change: security staff are the weather vane of responsible gaming culture

By Darren Groth

At the entrance to the casino, a young man arrives accompanied by an older woman. Security officer Azhar greets the couple with a warm smile and a polite request to check the young man’s ID. He notes the date.

“Happy birthday,” he says.

“Thank you,” replies the young man.

“You’re 19 today?”

“Yes. I wanted to visit the casino to celebrate.”

“I’m his mother,” says the woman. “I’m here to make sure he doesn’t get into trouble.”

Azhar nods. “I’m glad you came – thank you.” He hands the ID back. “Before you start your night, could you spare a few minutes? I’d like you to meet someone who’ll help make sure your first visit to the casino is a positive one.”

Azhar brings the pair across the slot floor to the GameSense Info Centre. He introduces them to the Advisor and assures them this is the place to understand how gambling works: house edge, randomness, the odds of the games, myths players might have.

“Knowing what you’re doing,” he adds, “is the best way to keep it fun.”

Later, when the pair are leaving the casino, the mother will go out of her way to find Azhar and thank him for taking care of her son.

During her rounds, security officer Tina observes a regular poker player showing clear signs of tiredness. Between hands, she approaches and asks if she can help in any way.

“I’m fine, Tina,” the player replies.

“Glad to hear that. I did happen to notice you yawning a few times. And looking a little uncomfortable in your seat.”

The player folds his arms, shrugs. “Yeah, I could probably do with a break.”

“What sort of break you thinking of? Coffee? Stretch the legs? Or are you thinking away from the casino for a time?”

“I guess…away? I mean, for a couple of days. Just to re-set a bit at home.”

Tina nods. “Take as long as you need. Home is the priority for sure.” Heading to the exit, Tina asks the player if he’d like a cab ride – he says he is good to drive.

A week after the interaction, when the player returns to site, he thanks Tina for her concern and assures her he will comply with the ‘No Yawning’ rules.

“Awesome,” replies Tina, with a laugh. “I don’t want to have to kick you out.”

The sole player in the quietest corner of the slot floor – security officer Benny has confirmed he is a Voluntary Self-Exclusion participant. As Benny nears, the player rises from his seat.

“I know, I know,” he says. “You going to lecture me?”

“No,” replies Benny. “VSE can be tough. Relapses happen.” He holds a plain white envelope in his hand. “This is the kit we gave you when you first signed up. It has good info – frequently asked questions, support line, community contacts. I’d like to give it to you again, just as a reminder of the positive commitment you made to yourself.”

The player hesitates for a moment then accepts the kit. On the way out – via a quieter route on the perimeter of the casino floor – the player has a quick look inside the envelope, then murmurs a comment about ‘something to hang onto’. At the exit, he thanks Benny for not making a big deal about the interception.

“Don’t take this the wrong way,” says Benny, smiling. “I hope I don’t see you again.”

Parq Vancouver

The stories above are based on true-to-life experiences (names changed for anonymity). Individually and collectively, they speak to a robust responsible gaming culture, one that actions connection and care over compliance and enforcement. And it’s no coincidence that security staff feature in all three scenarios – in a very real sense, security performance is the best measure of a gaming facility’s customer support climate.

At Parq Vancouver, we have come far on our responsible gambling culture journey, particularly with our security team. In partnership with British Columbia Lottery Corporation, and through our own in-house initiatives, security personnel at Parq are among the best trained in Canada, completing multiple courses – Appropriate Response, VSE Enhancement, New Employment Orientation, Circle of Service – that emphasize the win-wins of a humanist approach. For the many fine exponents of the security role, the training often serves as confirmation of their own successful interaction strategies and recognition for the value-add they provide to the site.

Beyond training, Parq Vancouver’s RG culture is evident throughout our operations. Parq’s policy platform features unique directives specific to red flag response and optimal VSE support, each one setting a ‘soft-skill’ standard for all associates – not just security – to acknowledge and perform. We constantly message across the wide range of associate touchpoints, both physical and online, reinforcing connection and care as our north stars. Through a variety of polls and surveys, we research and evaluate our people’s RG engagement and delivery. The sum total of these initiatives, and our many other efforts across the organization, has seen us rank top five in Canada for the Responsible Gambling Council’s RG Check assessment of best practice.

In the end, though, the job is never done, and continuous improvement remains our mantra. And as we further strive to harness the winds of RG cultural change, our security team – as always – will be our weather vane, helping point the way.

BetRivers extends partnership with Canadian broadcaster Dan O’Toole

Rush Street Interactive has announced that its BetRivers brand, which is now operational in the regulated Ontario market, has extended its partnership with Canadian sports broadcaster Dan O’Toole.

O’Toole has signed an exclusive brand and content deal with BetRivers. He began hosting “Boomsies!”, a weekly podcast about sports and life, earlier this year and it quickly became one of the top sports podcasts in the Canadian market, notes a Rush Street release. He made his debut as a BetRivers Brand Ambassador in a series of television ads that aired in Canada during the 2022 Winter Olympics.

O’Toole’s media career has spanned two decades and includes a long tenure as a television sports anchor on Canada’s TSN’s SportsCentre. He also spent several years at Fox Sports 1 in Los Angeles.

“Joining BetRivers and hosting Boomsies! is a terrific way for me to continue to do what I love and to engage with sports fans,” said O’Toole. “With BetRivers.ca’s live launch in Ontario this week, this is an exciting moment in the evolution of sports betting here in Canada and a great opportunity for me to provide commentary and share my passion for sports with my fellow Canadians, as well as in other markets throughout the U.S. where BetRivers has sportsbooks.”

“Dan O’Toole has had a tremendous broadcasting career in Canada,” said Richard Schwartz, CEO of RSI, which operates BetRivers.ca. “Having him join our BetRivers team to create content and produce podcasts is bringing a new level of expertise and entertainment to our betting family.”

Other licensed and as-yet unlicensed sportsbooks have struck similar deals with an eye on the Ontario market.

For one, NorthStar Bets, the yet-to-launch sports betting partner of Torstar media, recently signed up Canadian sports broadcaster Rod Black as a host and brand ambassador.

theScore Bet becomes exclusive gaming partner of the Toronto Blue Jays

theScore Bet, the Toronto-based sportsbook that was one of the first 13 operators to launch in Ontario’s new regulated market, has become the latest brand to secure a milestone partnership by becoming the official gaming partner of the Toronto Blue Jays.

The 10-year exclusive partnership between the sportsbook and Canada’s sole Major League Baseball franchise brings together two best-in-class Canadian organizations to offer fans innovative and exciting ways to experience the game, both at the ballpark and online, says a Score Media release.

The deal makes Penn National Gaming-owned theScore Bet the Blue Jays’ first gaming partner and the Jays the Score Bet’s first professional team sponsorship.

The deal grants theScore Bet exclusive national marketing rights that extend across all gaming categories including sports betting, casino, online casino, and fantasy sports. The Blue Jays and theScore Bet also plan to create a branded, premium, 365-days-a-year, flagship sports bar and restaurant at Rogers Centre that will serve as an entertainment hub and destination for fans.

The partnership also delivers new exclusive in-stadium and digital offerings to Blue Jays fans and theScore Bet users through various sponsorship elements, including two immersive premium seating sections on the baselines, extensive in-stadium branding, in-game features, a host of team-related experiences, and also designates the sportsbook as the presenting partner of the Jays Care 50/50 program.

“The fan experience is evolving and this monumental partnership with theScore Bet offers compelling new ways for sports enthusiasts to be a part of the game,” said Mark Shapiro, President & CEO, Toronto Blue Jays. “We are excited to be partnering with a Canadian company that operates at the highest level of the industry and understands our role in Toronto and Canada, to bring baseball to more fans nationwide.”

“theScore Bet is proudly Canadian and we are thrilled to make Canada’s baseball team our long-term partner,” said John Levy, CEO of theScore. “This is a foundational partnership with a team and organization that is deeply embedded in our country’s sports culture. Teaming with the Blue Jays opens up exciting new exclusive marketing opportunities and brings theScore Bet even closer to a huge audience of passionate and engaged fans, both on-site at Rogers Centre and online across our platforms. With our combined loyal audiences and brand affinity in Ontario, we believe this deal will establish a new standard for team and gaming operator relationships as we pioneer innovative ways to experience and interact with the game.”

Such partnerships have been a recurring theme in recent months as sportsbooks gear up to establish their market position.

PointsBet Canada, for instance, has entered a similar partnership with the Ottawa Redblacks as well as other organizations such as Curling Canada and the NHL Alumni Association. FanDuel has united with major Canadian sports broadcaster TSN in recent days, while the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation’s PROLINE was last month named the NHL’s official partner in Canada.

It will be interesting to see how the relationship between licensed sportsbooks and the MLB continues, meanwhile, as MLB players can now officially endorse sportsbooks via marketing and ambassadorial deals.

Light & Wonder completes sale of lottery business

Light & Wonder has officially completed the sale of its Scientific Games Lottery business to Canadian investment firm Brookfield Business Partners.

The sale, which had been previously announced in October 2021, has now been finalized for US$5.8 billion in gross cash proceeds and approximately $5 billion of net after-tax cash proceeds. Light & Wonder called the deal “a major milestone”.

Light & Wonder says its priorities are now “debt reduction to a target net debt leverage ratio range of 2.5x to 3.5x”, repurchasing shares in order to return substantial capital to shareholders, and exploring “disciplined investment in key growth opportunities”, where the firm will prioritize its capital for buy-backs, debt reduction and organic investments.

Barry Cottle, Chief Executive Officer of Light & Wonder, said the transaction is “a significant step” towards streamlining Light & Wonder’s portfolio and balance sheet.

“The convergence of land-based and digital continues to gain momentum and we are strongly positioned to be a leader in the industry,” Cottle said. “With the completion of the lottery business sale and the upcoming sale of our sports betting business, we are moving rapidly as we execute on our vision to be a leading cross-platform global game provider and unlock the full potential of Light & Wonder. This also positions the lottery business for success as a stand-alone company completely focused on innovating for its global lottery customers.”

Last month, Light & Wonder announced a rebrand of its Scientific Games name. However, the lottery business will maintain that name as it acts as a standalone company with a singular focus on its lottery customers.

Sportradar launches Integrity Exchange alongside Ontario entry

Sportradar’s integrity unit Sportradar Integrity Services has launched the Sportradar Integrity Exchange to help combat suspicious betting activity.

The sports technology company’s subsidiary, Sportradar AG, has been registered as a gaming supplier for online and mobile wagering in Ontario’s newly opened market by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.

In addition, Sportradar Integrity Services has launched the Sportradar Integrity Exchange, a network that allows bookmakers to report suspicious betting activity. The no-cost service is the company’s first official integrity initiative with bookmakers, allowing them to increase their activity to combat match-fixing and help initiate integrity investigations globally.

The Integrity Exchange provides bookmakers with several tools to help them understand the global match-fixing landscape.

These include a two-way channel with an integrity experts team to exchange information and raise integrity-related concerns; monthly and quarterly match-fixing intelligence reports featuring insights and analysis; online education tools such as webinars and an onboarding session with an integrity expert; and an annual report featuring a global match-fixing breakdown.

“We’re inviting bookmakers to strengthen their contribution to the anti-match-fixing fight,” commented Andreas Krannich, Managing Director of Sportradar Integrity Services. “The Sportradar Integrity Exchange is a key part of our integrity vision to tackle match-fixing and follows the Universal Fraud Detection System bet monitoring system for sports organizations that we made free-of-charge last year. It means that we can address corruption from different aspects of the industry – it’s the flip side of the same coin and is the next step in our strategy to fight the growing match-fixing problem.”

In 2021, Sportradar Integrity Services detected 903 suspicious matches across 10 sports and in 76 countries worldwide.

Sportradar now holds 36 licenses in North America across U.S. states, Canadian provinces, territories, and Indigenous communities. It also has partnerships with several North American sports leagues, who feature nine professional franchises in the Canadian market.
