IBIA members pledge $300k to help guard against sports betting related match-fixing

The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) and its member operators bet365, Betway and FanDuel have pledged their commitment to a new Canada-wide athlete education program.

Established to preserve and protect integrity in sport, the program aims to address the potential threat to athletes, sport and the regulated market from sports betting related match-fixing and fraud.

A minimum figure of $300,000 over three years has been committed towards the cause by the funding partners.

Khalid Ali, CEO of IBIA, the leading integrity monitor in Ontario, commented: “IBIA is delighted that our members, such as bet365, Betway and FanDuel, are so committed to sports betting education and are prepared to invest in such an important initiative. All of the partners are excited to see the positive impact this project will have on maintaining the integrity of Canadian sport and the players themselves.

“For IBIA, sports integrity, and investing in the people that make sport happen, matters.”

The announcement on the program’s formation was made yesterday (May 30) at the “Symposium on Competition Manipulation and Gambling in Sport” in Toronto, an event co-sponsored by IBIA, bet365, Betway and FanDuel, where interested observers included the AGCO, AGLC, NBA, NHL and NFL.

The CFL was also in attendance, a pertinent observation considering the league’s own new e-learning course, ‘CFL Match Manipulation Policy’, was launched last week by The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES).

Like IBIA, the CFL is determined to protect against the increasing threats of match manipulation to ensure peak integrity in sport.

Anthony Werkman, CEO of Betway, said: “Protecting the integrity of sport is key to what we do, so we’re delighted to be giving our commitment to working with our partners to fund and develop an effective athlete education program in Canada.

“As a global brand, we have a commitment to combating any form of betting corruption, both globally and locally, and we look forward to working with the other members to help shape a better future for both sports organizations and regulators.”

The project funding partners are in active discussions regarding a ‘delivery body’, with the intention to finalize it ‘in the coming weeks’. The program will then be rolled out over the second half of this year and is intended to include face-to-face athlete training, an e-learning portal, anonymous reporting app and awareness raising material.

Dale Hooper, GM, FanDuel Canada, said: “Maintaining the integrity of sport is essential to players’ safety and enjoyment—the pillars of what we do at FanDuel. As a newly-regulated market, we are committed to supporting educational programs in Ontario that will help increase understanding and protections for athletes, bettors, and beyond.”

Jean-Francois Reymond, IBIA’s Education Ambassador and a former professional basketball player and VP of the World Players Association, added: “Protecting the integrity of sport means protecting the integrity of athletes. Most often through a lack of awareness, it is the athletes who are risking their careers and livelihoods.

“Our objective is to build a best-in-class program for all athletes that serves to protect the integrity of Canadian sport and the careers of Canada’s athletes.”

CFL players enrol on match manipulation awareness course amid sports betting boom

Canadian Football League (CFL) players will be educated on the hazards of sports betting and potential for manipulation in sport as part of a new e-learning course launched by The Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport (CCES).

The new ‘CFL Match Manipulation Policy’ has been implemented to ‘maintain the integrity of the league and protect against the increasing threats of match manipulation’, with the course guiding players through activities that outline the core components of the policy, as well as example scenarios.

These components include corruption offences, the consequences of those offences, and how to report incidents of match manipulation and cooperate in related investigations.

“When done responsibly, sports wagering can be a way for our fans to better connect with the game they love, but it can also open the possibility for individuals and outcomes to be questioned,” said CFL Commissioner Randy Ambrosie.

“The Match Manipulation Policy and its corresponding education safeguards the integrity of our great game and the character of our players, leaders and personnel. As sports wagering grows, we must continue to focus on education, responsibility and accountability throughout the league.”

The CCES has reported that a single CFL game can generate over $6m in global wagers, highlighting just how lucrative the league is and therefore how susceptible it can be to match-fixers.

With players and those closely associated with the CFL in a potentially vulnerable position, the decision has been made to launch the course – the first-of-its-kind for a professional league in Canada – to protect the league’s most valuable assets.

Jeremy Luke, CCES President and CEO, explained: “The CFL’s new Match Manipulation Policy provides an important layer of protection for the league against anyone who would try to manipulate events for their gain.

“As with all policies, it’s essential that everyone who is subject to it has a clear sense of their rights and responsibilities under that policy. The e-learning course the CCES has provided for players and personnel will ensure learners understand the policy’s core elements and gives them the tools to identify match manipulation in practice.”

Developed in partnership with McLaren Global Sport Solutions (MGSS), the CFL Match Manipulation Policy is designed specifically for the league and has has four stated objectives:

  • To maintain the integrity of the CFL;
  • To protect against efforts to improperly impact the results of CFL games, activities, or the season;
  • To establish a uniform rule and consistent scheme of enforcement and sanctions for everyone who is subject to the policy; and
  • To ensure that agreements with sportsbooks comply with the CFL Authorized Gaming Operator program requirements.

The rise in popularity of sports betting has created potential pitfalls for many, if not all, leagues around the world, irrespective of the sport.

Just across the border, the ‘Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising’ – comprising nine organisations, including MLB, NFL and MLS – was set up to tackle the growing problem of sports betting advertisements.

While leagues and teams have benefitted from various sponsorships that bring money into sport, there is a growing expectancy that players, coaches, fans and more, are given the maximum protection and education of the dangers of sports betting in order to negate the negative impacts of the product.

Additionally, there will be a variety of exclusive roundtable discussions on regulatory and market developments, the intricacies of several Canadian provinces and the work of First Nations-led businesses and sports teams.

With a wealth of talent and ideas emerging in Canada, embodying strong leadership and innovative growth strategies, industry startups will get the opportunity to compete at the inaugural Canadian Gaming Summit ‘First Pitch’ competition, which shines a light on the best and brightest of the region.

Father of ice hockey icon backs campaign against sports betting ads in Canada

Karl Subban, father of the former ice hockey star PK Subban, has vocalised his opposition to the level of sports betting advertisements in Canada.

It’s a topic that has set tongues wagging recently, particularly in light of the proposal announced by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) last month to ban the use of athletes as part of a significant reform of online gambling advertising standards.

The Ontario crown agency has been engaging with a ‘broad range of stakeholders’ on the topic, and has received approximately 40 submissions to aid its final decision.

The proposal looks to have gained further momentum after the formation of the Coalition for Responsible Sports Betting Advertising, a voluntary organization made up of major sports leagues like MLB and NFL, and leading broadcasters such as Fox and NBCUniversal.

Subban, meanwhile, has joined the Campaign to Ban Ads for Gambling, which is calling for sports betting advertisements to be removed from all hockey broadcasts.

Specifically, the group and Subban are unhappy with the perceived pressure that gambling advertisements are having on vulnerable groups such as children, people with financial issues, and those with any mental health issues including addiction.

“We know what the science tells us, that the part of the brain that is responsible for decision making is not fully developed until you’re 25,” Subban told CTV News.

Asked what his thoughts would be if his son PK appeared in a sports gambling advertisement, Subban, who has two other sons in the professional ice hockey game – Malcolm and Jordan – said: “I’m still going to love him, but I’m not going to love him in those ads.

“It’s on them, it’s not on me. So many young people love him, but I don’t want the kids to love him in those gambling ads, and I’ll say that about any of the hockey stars who’re in these ads promoting something that doesn’t make us any better. It just makes some people richer.”

When asked if banning celebrities and athletes from the advertisements is the answer, Subban believes “anything will help,” and added that there’s a “need to limit the volume of these ads because the athletes, actors and actresses in these commercials are so powerful and influential”.

Alternatively, CTV News spoke in December with Paul Burns, CEO of the Canadian Gaming Association (CGA), who said that regulated online gambling is safer than the alternative of the last several years.

“Canadians were accessing gaming with no controls, no oversight, no protection. And that’s what this has done, that’s been the biggest change in the last 12 months,” said Burns.

As for the influx of the sports betting commercials featuring major sports stars, Burns said the view of the CGA is that “advertising is part of what comes with having a regulated gaming market and over time people will understand what the ads are.”

The partnership with Booming Games was only the first of the week announced by Fortune Coins Casino, though, as the Blazesoft subsidiary followed it up with today’s release that a similar deal had been struck with Swedish casino content provider Fantasma Games.

Mirroring the strategic partnership agreed between Booming Games and Fortune Coins Casino, Fantasma Games will provide the social casino with 27 new slot titles to bolster its current portfolio.

The slots include a number of special features such as multipliers, wilds, free spins, expanding reels, and progression meters.

Fredrik Johansson, CEO and Founder of Fantasma Games, commented: “We are thrilled to launch our games with Fortune Coins, one of the leading operators within the social casino space. Our games draw inspiration from the traditional gaming industry to increase player engagement, and we are excited to offer our top-performing games to Fortune Coins.”

Since its launch in April 2022, Fortune Coins Casino has amassed two million registered users across the US and Canada, a feat that has garnered the attention of brands looking to expand their presence in the North American market, and specifically those two countries.

“We have great admiration for the accomplishments of Fantasma Games, and we believe that combining our respective strengths and expertise can lead to fruitful outcomes,” said Mickey Blayvas, CEO at Blazesoft.

“As one of our key partners, we hope Fantasma’s unique slot collection will raise the stakes for our avid slot fans.”

The two partnerships agreed with Booming Games and Fantasma Games this week follow others announced earlier this year, including deals with Canadian gaming provider Let Us Entertain You Inc. and aggregation platform Relax Gaming.

Rivalry achieves record Q1 revenues on ‘path to profitability’

Rivalry has sounded a positive update on its quest to become a profitable company, reporting significant growth for its revenue, betting handle and gross profit in Q1.

Publishing its financial results for the three-month period ended Mar. 31, the esports, sports betting and media firm revealed its betting handle increased 199% YoY, from $40.2m in Q1 2022 to $120.2m in Q1 2023, breaking its quarterly record of $83.9m in Q4 2022.

Revenue was also on the rise for the Toronto-based company, growing 151% YoY to $12m (Q1 2022: $7.2m) and 27% over Q4 2022 revenue of $9.4m.

Other topline numbers included $5.4m gross profit, a record high for the company representing an increase of $4.8m from $0.7m of gross profit in Q1 2022, and up 9% from Q4 2022 gross profit of $5m.

Although the TSXV-listed firm – which intends to apply to uplist – continued to operate at a loss, this was cut down by 50% from $6.6m in Q1 2022 to $3.3m last quarter, as the operator continues to edge towards net profitability.

“Our position at the intersection of esports and entertainment continues to create operating leverage in the business and drive organic growth as seen in our most impressive quarterly results to date,” said Steven Salz, Co-Founder and CEO of Rivalry.

“Rivalry’s content and brand strategy is setting the industry precedent for betting entertainment, allowing us to acquire customers profitably and engage them through authentic touchpoints without having to consistently deploy additional marketing and promotional spend for growth.

“And it is this approach that is generating breakthrough industry economics, user engagement, and charting a path to profitability for the company that we are very bullish on.”

Rivalry also highlighted the fact that registrations had doubled YoY, reaching 1.5 million users, with Millenials and Gen Z representing 97% of active users as the firm continues to hone in on its target market.

The company has acknowledged the work of esports teams and influencers in helping to bolster customer activations during ‘tentpole’ events, and these partnerships and holdings helped reach a total of 85 million followers in Q1, despite a 5% YoY reduction in marketing spend.

Rivalry’s update also noted the work of its proprietary sportsbook and casino products which contributed toward an ‘uptick’ in user engagement and site activity, with the firm’s in-house technology enabling customisation of its products to ‘create an original, engaging, and entertaining betting experience tailored for next generation users’.

“Building innovative products, which add to an overall unique and interactive betting experience on Rivalry, will remain a strategic focus in 2023,” Salz concluded.

“The competitive advantage of engaging and fun products is increased user activity and satisfaction, and when combined with a profitable acquisition strategy, creates a flywheel effect in the business generating consistent organic momentum and enhancing our operational efficiency.”

Rivalry closes Q1 with $17.85m in cash and no debt, whilst also having raised $10m through a non-brokered private placement led by global bookmaker Pinnacle last month, after which it made a $10m investment in product innovation and development.

‘Affiliates & Advertising” conference track announced for Canadian Gaming Summit

The ‘Affiliates & Advertising’ conference track at the 26th edition of the Canadian Gaming Summit – the country’s premier gaming and betting event- is set to explore the most effective practices affiliates can use to capitalize a burgeoning Canadian market.

With sports betting and iGaming being a newly publicized market in Canada, it is imperative companies recognize the importance of marketing in an impactful, efficient and user-oriented manner.

The ‘Affiliates & Advertising’ conference track will commence on Thursday June 15th, the second core day of the Canadian Gaming Summit, located at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. Opening the conference track is the panel ‘Brave new world: how affiliates can guarantee a successful launch in the Canadian market’, which will see affiliate experts explore how a comprehensive understanding of player choice and betting customs will aid in successful product launches and maximize conversions amongst audiences. Quebec Online Gaming Coalition looking to emulate Ontario model of regulation

A number of online gaming operators have convened to establish the Quebec Online Gaming Coalition (QOGC), an organisation focused on developing a new regulatory framework for the industry.

Working with the Quebec Government and local stakeholders, the QOGC is seeking “to address growing concerns about consumer safety, responsible gaming, advertising, and substantially increasing government revenues based on a new licensing regime for qualified private operators”.

The new regulation model is also believed to have been inspired from a similar legislation introduced in Ontario last year.

The eight founding members of the Quebec Online Gaming Coalition are:

  • Apricot Investments
  • Betway
  • Bet99
  • DraftKings
  • Entain
  • Flutter
  • Games Global
  • RushStreet

The QOGC was assembled in response to a recent survey conducted by Leger Marketing, which found that 66% of respondents are in favour of regulating private online gaming operators by establishing a licensing and tax system.

Another salient statistic to emerge from the findings was 71% of Quebec residents believe that their government cannot block private online gaming operators.

Furthermore, 75% agreed that the tax revenues generated by a regulatory framework for private online gaming sites should help fund social responsibility programs such as addiction prevention, with 64% agreeing that these additional revenues should help fund various government priorities.

Ontario inspiration

There have been previous attempts to implement a new regulatory framework based on a licensing model aimed at private operators, notably in a 2014 report – the Online Gambling Task Force – chaired by Dr. Louise Nadeau.

However, the report and its recommendations were shelved by the previous government.

Subsequently, the province of Ontario has grown to become an influential figure within Canada, launching a newly regulated market in April 2022 following a collaborative effort between iGaming Ontario (iGO) and the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO).

Their model requires private online gaming operators to obtain a license before operating in Ontario, in order to access the market.

The two entities appear to have struck gold so far, with an Ipsos survey revealing a significant increase in the number of people gambling on regulated sites – rather than unregulated sites – at the start of the year.

It was further highlighted last month that Ontario had taken an estimated $35.6bn in total wagers and approximately $1.4bn in total gaming revenue (excluding OLG) – more than $380m of which came from private gaming operators – in its first year.

These numbers have helped propel the province into the top five gaming jurisdictions in North America.

With Ontario seemingly leading the way in Canada, the province of Quebec is looking to bridge the gap and strike its own success in the market.

Calling for an independent regulatory body in Quebec, the coalition stated: “As part of its mission, Coalition members will be promoting the benefits for the Government of Québec to create an independent regulatory body that will establish standardized controls on responsible gaming to protect vulnerable and underage players.

“To that end, Coalition members are also committed to contribute to the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et Culture to continue to study gaming behaviours and the ways in which the Coalition can protect and provide a safe and responsible gaming experience for Quebecers.

“The Coalition believes that the introduction of regulation would allow the Québec government to earn revenues over and above those already offered by the current system, and that these new funds should be reinvested in key sectors of the Québec economy.”
