The recent release of Stats Canada’s report on gambling earned a great deal of media across the country with many articles placing heavy emphasis on problem gambling even though the report contained no data on the issue. We did appreciate an editorial that appeared in the Saskatoon Star Phoenix titled “Another study on gambling a poor response” that attempted to turn down the rhetoric and offer some perspective.
The linkage between industry revenue and rates of problem gambling is one of those unfortunate myths continually perpetuated by industry critics. A great piece of research by Dr. Jamie Wiebe and Dr. Rachel Volberg titled Problem Gambling Prevalence Research: A Critical Overview offers a better understanding of the prevalence of problem gambling across time and jurisdiction.
We also wish to remind you that the Stats Canada information is based on a survey of household expenditures and should be used cautiously. One only needs to look at the employment data in the report (see CGA Release from 2008).
According the report Canada’s gaming industry dropped 5000 jobs in 2008 to 41,000 from 46,000 in 2007. This is after hitting a high of 54,000 in 2004 only to see that number drop to 40,000 by 2006. The most accurate employment data on the Canadian gaming industry can be found in the CGA’s Economic Impact Study.
