Saskatchewan Considers iGaming

Saskatchewan is considering a move towards online gaming. Ken Cheveldayoff, MLA for Sasktatoon Silver Springs, and the minister in charge of two publically owned casinos, recently stated that interest in creating a provincially run online gambling venture is heating up amongst officials, saying, "I think that it's growing. It's there and it's something we're going to have to look at very closely."

With an estimated $30 million already being spent by Saskatchewan residents on onling gaming outside of the province's borders, Cheveldayoff said Saskatchewan would benefit from developing its own iGaming venture, thereby redirecting those dollars back into the province.

"What troubles me is that the profits are leaving the province and can't be reinvested in the good activities that Gaming Corporation, for example, does," he added.

If Saskatchewan is to officially branch out into online gaming, it will join a growing list of Canadian provinces currently pursuing similar online initiatives including Quebec, British Columbia, and Ontario.
