Edgewater Casino approved for B.C. Place relocation, denied expansion
Vancouver city officials have reached a decision regarding Paragon Gaming's Edgewater Casino relocation and expansion. This month, the city council gave the go ahead for Edgewater to move from its current False Creek location to a proposed hotel and entertainment complex next to the B.C. Place; however it also confirmed it would not give the casino permission to more than double the number of gaming tables and slot machines at the new location.
The final decision flies in opposition of Vancouver mayor Gregor Robertson's campaign promise to block similar casino expansions. Voicing his concern to media, he insisted, "The majority of councillors, myself included as well, were very clear we were not in support of any further expansion of gambling for this next term, and elected under those conditions...So, to make it as clear as it possibly could be, there will be no expansion of gambling on my watch."
Paragon Gaming has been seeking the city approval to relocate the Edgewater Casino into the entertainment and hotel development scheduled to be built next to the B.C. Place since 2010. Now that it has received permission for the relocation, but not for an expansion, Paragon's next move will be to submit revised plans for a smaller facility.
